Main Components of Bactericides and Algaecides

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds: These are among the most common active substances in bactericides and algaecides, such as dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (DBC) and tetradecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. They kill bacteria and algae by disrupting the cell membrane structure of microorganisms, causing leakage of cell contents. Quaternary ammonium compounds have broad-spectrum bactericidal activity, are effective against both bacteria and algae, have low toxicity, and are easily biodegradable.

 

Chlorine-Containing Compounds: Such as sodium hypochlorite and sodium dichloroisocyanurate, these compounds release available chlorine to oxidize the enzyme systems within microorganisms, interfering with their metabolic processes and thus killing them. Chlorine-containing compounds have a fast bactericidal speed, but may produce byproducts such as chlorinated organic compounds; therefore, careful attention must be paid to the dosage and residue control.

 

Organic Bromine Compounds: Such as bromochlorohydantoin and dibromohydantoin, these components slowly release bromide ions and hypobromic acid into water, providing sustained bactericidal ability and being environmentally friendly, reducing potential harm to aquatic organisms. Isothiazolinones: Such as mixtures of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (CIT) and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (MIT), these components achieve bactericidal effects by inhibiting protein synthesis within microorganisms, and are characterized by high efficiency, low toxicity, and broad spectrum.

 

Peroxides: Such as hydrogen peroxide and peracetic acid, these components destroy the structure of microbial cells through strong oxidation, achieving rapid bactericidal effects. These components are suitable for applications requiring rapid sterilization, but caution should be exercised regarding their corrosiveness to metals.
